PM Modi Inaugurates BRESE 2026 Global Renewable Energy Summit in New Delhi

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo (BRESE) 2026 in New Delhi on November 2. Hosted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the four-day summit (Nov 2–5) brings together dignitaries, investors, industry leaders, and innovators from over 130 countries. Australia, Denmark, the EU, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK participate as Country Partners. The summit also hosts the 9th Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the 4th International Conference on Green Hydrogen (ICGH).

MNRE Secretary Santosh Sarangi stated that India's non-fossil fuel capacity has reached 308 GW, firmly advancing toward the 2030 target of 500 GW. Approximately $220 billion in investment will be needed between 2027 and 2030. India currently has about 261 GW of solar module manufacturing capacity, making it a critical node in the global PV supply chain. In H1 2026, India added a record ~29 GW of solar and wind capacity, with solar alone at ~26 GW (+43% YoY). Gujarat led with 7.6 GW, followed by Rajasthan with 6.6 GW.

For the first time, BRESE integrates the ISA Assembly and the ICGH under one platform, with the theme "Invest · Innovate · Inspire," covering 10 major clean energy tracks. Multiple major investment agreements covering PV manufacturing, energy storage, green hydrogen, and grid infrastructure are expected to be signed during the summit.

Commentary: India's BRESE Summit — A Strategic Leap from Policy Attraction to Platform Integration

With 308 GW of non-fossil capacity and a 500 GW target by 2030, India is becoming one of the most attractive markets for global clean investment. The $220 billion investment need for 2027–2030 translates to over $50 billion annually — nearly the GDP of a mid-sized nation.

By integrating the ISA Assembly and the International Conference on Green Hydrogen, BRESE reflects India's strategic upgrade from policy attraction to platform integration. This is not an ordinary industry expo; it is India's declaration of intent to position itself as a core node in global clean energy governance. The participation of 130+ countries, nine Country Partners, and the convergence of three major conferences signal that India is replicating China's Belt and Road Summit model — but with clean energy as the theme.

For international investors, India offers full-chain opportunities: PV manufacturing (261 GW module capacity, second globally), energy storage deployment (urgent grid stability needs), green hydrogen projects (low-cost solar-powered electrolysis), and grid infrastructure upgrades. Yet risks are equally significant: frequent adjustments to the ALMM (Approved List of Models and Manufacturers) policy can abruptly change market access rules; state-level DISCOM financial fragility leads to long project payment cycles; land acquisition and transmission interconnection bottlenecks remain critical constraints on large-scale project execution.
